The new home of the Mississippi Supreme Court is a 183,000 square foot, limestone clad building consisting of an elevated basement slab and 5-floors of shell space. The second floor area included a huge atrium with cast-in-place concrete curved walls, interior columns, oval windows and theater-style seating
The building is elaborately adorned with more than 52,000 cubic feet of limestone which included 10.121 pieces that came in 136 truckloads. This Indiana limestone was drawn from the “crown” quarry, adjacent to the “empire” quarry, which supplied the limestone that adorns the Empire State Building in New York.
The project features 18 columns that are 32 feet tall and have a diameter of 41 inches with ornate hand-carved ionic capitals topping each column. The 48,000-lb. columns that enhance the front of the building came in six segments that were pieced together.
